How To Obliterate Old Patterns and Forge New
Pathways For Your Healing & Happiness
Healing isn’t always about moving forward in a
straight line.
In fact, one of the most confusing parts of any
healing journey is feeling like you’ve taken steps backward.
As you move along your pathway and begin to
grow, to understand yourself, to respond differently, you may suddenly find yourself
reverting back to former patterns of behaviour or reacting in the same old
ways.
It leaves you wondering, “Why am I back
here again?”
The truth is you’re not back at the beginning.
You’re simply being given another opportunity
to understand something on a deeper level. And often, that “something” is a
pattern.
Patterns are the quiet, automatic ways we
think, feel, and respond to the world around us. They are built over time,
shaped by our experiences, relationships, and the environments we’ve been in.
Many of these patterns were formed long before
we had the awareness to question them. They became normalized to us, simply our
way of navigating life, protecting ourselves, and making sense of what we were
feeling.
Here are a couple of examples to illustrate my point:
- If you grew up in an environment where expressing emotions didn’t feel safe, you may have learned to shut down or stay quiet.
- If love or approval felt inconsistent, you may have learned to people-please or overextend yourself to feel valued.
These responses didn’t come from weakness—they
came from adaptation. They
served a purpose.
And that’s the important part to remember:
patterns are not the enemy. They are, in many ways, evidence of how you learned
to cope.
The challenge is that what once protected you
can sometimes begin to limit you. As you grow and your life changes, those same
patterns may no longer serve the person you’re becoming.
- Avoiding conflict may keep the peace temporarily, but it can also prevent honest communication.
- Putting everyone else first may create connection, but it can also leave you feeling unseen and exhausted.
- Shutting down emotionally may protect you from discomfort, but it can also block deeper relationships and understanding.
Yet even when you recognize these patterns,
they don’t just disappear.
There will be moments, especially when you’re
overwhelmed, triggered, tired, or emotionally stretched, when those old
responses may easily show up. Your mind and body, trying to protect you, will
reach for what is familiar. It will say, “We’ve been here before. I know how
to handle this.”
And just like that, you may find yourself
reacting in ways you thought you had moved past.
This is where many people become discouraged
because returning to an old pattern, possibly not a positive one, feels like
failure.
Perspective is key here. When we accept that there’s no such thing as ‘failure’, only growth opportunities, what could feel like a setback, instead becomes part of the learning and progressing process.
Healing isn’t about negating or trying to
erase your past responses or experiences.
Your healing journey, involves becoming aware
of them, understanding them, and slowly learning to choose differently, to
overcome them.
The most powerful shift happens the moment you
notice – when you become aware that there are better choices to make, more
productive ones, more positive or constructive ones.
When that recognition happens BEFORE anything
negative unfolds – that’s a brilliant sign that a breakthrough has been
achieved. Right when you begin to
recognize, “This feels familiar. I’ve been here before”… that awareness alone creates space, space to
pause, to reflect, and to respond with intention rather than reaction.
And even if you don’t catch it right away,
even if you only see it afterward, that still matters.
Looking back and understanding what happened
allows you to connect the dots.
- What triggered you?
- What were you really feeling underneath the surface?
- When have you felt that way before?
These questions are not meant to judge you,
they’re meant to guide you. Underneath every pattern is a feeling that once
needed to be protected. Fear. Rejection. Hurt. Uncertainty. When you begin to
understand that, you’ll stop fighting yourself and start supporting yourself –
with grace, with comprehension, with the intention of improving.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I
should be past this by now.” But healing doesn’t work on a timeline.
Healing and personal growth doesn’t erase your past or the past hurts, it does
help you shift your perspective about those experiences to a different place, a
more useful one.
So when an old pattern shows up, instead of
criticizing yourself, try meeting that moment with understanding. Acknowledge
it. Name it. Remind yourself that this is something you are still working
through, and that’s okay.
From there, even the smallest shift in
response is meaningful.
- If your pattern is to shut down, maybe your next step is simply saying, “I need a moment to process this.”
- If your pattern is to avoid, maybe it’s choosing to stay in the conversation just a little longer.
- If your pattern is to please others, maybe it’s asking yourself what you need before saying yes.
These are not huge, dramatic changes—but they
are powerful ones. They are how new patterns begin.
Over time, as you continue to notice, pause,
and choose differently, you’ll begin to create a new way of responding. The old
patterns don’t disappear overnight, but they become quieter. Less automatic.
Less reactionary, more response-oriented and intentional.
It’s like forging a new pathway through a
wilderness. At first, it feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable, the terrain is
difficult to navigate, your footing is unsure.
While the old path feels easy and well-worn, a new one is fraught with
challenges.
The more you choose the new way, however, the
more conditioned your resiliency and emotional intelligence muscles become, and
the more natural it feels.
So if you find yourself in an old pattern
today, don’t see it as a setback. See it as awareness. See it as growth. See it
as an opportunity to meet yourself with more understanding and grace than you
did before.
Because every time you do that… you are
healing. 💛
